Oil steady near $92 as supplies, China weighed

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices were nearly unchanged Thursday in Asia as traders weighed signs of economic recovery in China against an increase in U.S. crude supplies.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 4 cents at $92.16 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained 3 cents to settle at $92.12 a barrel on Wednesday.

The Chinese economy grew 7.4 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier. That was down from 7.6 percent growth in the previous three months but a much gentler decline than in earlier quarters. The leveling out of China's growth slump along with an improvement in retail sales and investment in big ticket items such as factories suggested a recovery is taking shape.

But the U.S. government reported a bigger-than-expected increase in U.S. crude stocks on Wednesday with supplies up by 2.9 million barrels last week. The extra oil in storage tends to push prices down.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, rose 21 cents to $113.43 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Heating oil rose 0.7 cent to $3.184 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 0.8 cent to $3.462 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.2 cent to $2.763 per gallon.

Newsweek to cease print, go digital-only in 2013

(Newsweek)

After years of losing money,?Newsweek announced on Thursday that it will stop printing its magazine and become a digital-only publication.

"Newsweek will transition to an all-digital format in early 2013," editor Tina Brown wrote in an email to employees early on Thursday. "As part of this transition, the last print edition in the U.S. will be our December 31st issue."

The new all-digital publication, called Newsweek Global, "will be a single, worldwide edition," Brown wrote. The e-magazine will be supported by paid subscriptions and made available for e-readers for both tablet and the Web, with some content available on The Daily Beast.

More from Brown's email:

We are transitioning Newsweek, not saying goodbye to it. We remain committed to Newsweek and to the journalism that it represents. This decision is not about the quality of the brand or the journalism, that is as powerful as ever. It is about the challenging economics of print publishing and distribution.

The inexorable move to an all-digital Newsweek comes with an unfortunate reality. Regrettably we anticipate staff reductions and the streamlining of our editorial and business operations both here in the United States and internationally.

In 2010, the Washington Post Company sold Newsweek to audio equipment magnate Sidney Harman for $1 plus the assumption of the magazine's estimated $40 million-plus debt.

Later that year, Harman struck a deal with Brown, editor of The Daily Beast, and Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp (IAC) to run the business. Harman died in April 2011 at 92, leaving his ownership stake to his estate.

[Related: Tina Brown defends controversial Princess Di Newsweek cover]

(Newsweek)

In July, Harman's family said it would no longer invest in the 79-year-old magazine, leaving Diller and the Beast in full control. During a conference call with investors several weeks later, Diller hinted that the newsweekly?with a circulation of 1.5 million?would soon be a digital-only publication.

"The transition to online from hard print will take place," Diller said. "We're examining all of our options. ...?The brand is good. What's the problem? The problem is manufacturing and producing a weekly newsmagazine. That's going to have to be solved. Advertising in this category is entirely elective. The transition will happen."

IAC?which also owns Match.com, Ask.com and CollegeHumor.com?generates most of its revenue from digital properties.

According to Bloomberg.com, Newsweek is projected to lose as much as $22 million this year. In 2011, ad pages for Newsweek fell 16.8 percent, according to the Publishers Information Bureau?a dismal year following an even worse 2010, when ad pages plummeted nearly 20 percent.

[Related: Did Brown choose Michele Bachmann cover photo to make her 'look crazy'?]

Since taking the reins, Brown, former editor of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker, has put her stamp on Newsweek. She has produced controversial print covers (imagining what Princess Diana would have looked like at 50, for instance, declaring Barack Obama to be the "first gay president" or provoking outrage over with its "Muslim Rage" cover) in a bid to prop up newsstand sales, create buzz and be part of what she likes to call "the conversation."

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, those efforts proved futile, at least at the newsstand. Through June, Newsweek's single-copy sales were down 10 percent compared with the first half of 2011, selling an average of 42,065 copies per issue.

iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 given the ?Will it Blend? treatment

Love them or hate them, every year Blentec tests out its latest power blender against the latest tech toys. Normally we don?t have to wait very long for the latest iPhone to get the treatment; last year it was on launch day and the blending managed to upset quite a few folks who couldn?t get their hands on one for whatever reason. This year we have had to wait a few weeks since launch and it?s done a bit differently to normal. Blentec has pitted the iPhone 5 against the Samsung Galaxy S3.

It's time for Tom to get a new phone. So which one should he get? The new iPhone 5, or the Samsung Galaxy S3? You know how he will decide. Which blends best.

As you would expect, both phones end up as a pile of dust; such a waste of expensive electronics. Having said that, it is a great marketing initiative by Blendtec, at the time of writing, the video has already received over 106,000 views and was only released yesterday. Not a bad way to create interest in your blenders for just the cost of a couple of phones.

Key moments in Cuban emigration

More than 1 million people of Cuban descent live in the United States and thousands more make their homes in Europe or Latin America. The elimination of exit visas announced Tuesday could swell those numbers. Some key moments in Cuban emigration:

? January 1959: Rebels led by Fidel Castro take power. Many loyalists of dictator Fulgencio Batista flee immediately, followed by an increasing stream of other Cubans opposed to the new government's swing toward socialism.

? 1960-1962: "Pedro Pan" flights organized by the Roman Catholic Church bring 14,000 Cuban children to the United States so they don't fall under the control of communist ideology. Some never see their parents again.

? April 1961: President John F. Kennedy expands a program that helps arriving Cubans settle in the U.S. Castro declares Cuba socialist. U.S. organizes failed Bay of Pigs invasion.

? December 1961: Cuba begins requiring its citizens to get exit visas to travel abroad. Those who try to leave without permission face possible imprisonment.

? September 1965: Castro says the port of Camarioca near Varadero is open for all those trying to reach "the Yankee paradise," though those leaving will forfeit their property. The U.S. Coast Guard says nearly 3,000 leave before program is shut down that November.

? December 1965: Castro allows regular, U.S.-sponsored "Liberty Flights" that carry some 260,000 Cubans to the U.S. before President Richard Nixon halts the program in 1973.

? November 1966: Cuban Adjustment Act is passed to allow even illegal immigrants from Cuba to remain in United States.

? April 1980: Castro opens port of Mariel west of Havana for all Cubans who wish to leave. More than 125,000 rush by sea to the U.S. including thousands of former convicts, causing an immigration crisis in the United States. In June, President Jimmy Carter announces that those transporting migrants will face punishment. The opening is closed in September.

? August 1994: Castro declares he will not stop Cubans trying to leave; some 40,000 take to sea heading for United States. Some reach Florida, some are stopped by the U.S. Coast Guard. Some die.

? September 1994: After talks to end the rafter crisis, Cuban officials agree to curb the flow of refugees and promises not to prosecute or discriminate against those returned by the United States. The U.S. agrees to give at least 20,000 legal immigrant visas a year to Cubans, making it easier to arrive legally. It also says most Cubans caught at sea will be returned to Cuba while those who reach U.S. shores can stay.

? October 2012: Cuba announces it will no longer demand exit visas for travel abroad starting in January.

Girls may not have riskier sex after HPV vaccination

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Girls who had been vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) weren't more likely to get other sexually transmitted infections or to become pregnant, in a new study from Georgia.

That goes against worries on the part of some that getting the vaccine - which is supposed to ultimately help prevent cervical cancer - would encourage girls to become sexually active or engage in riskier sex than they otherwise would.

"Some parents have expressed it as a concern," said Saad Omer, an infectious diseases and vaccine researcher from Emory University in Atlanta who worked on the study.

"Parents can be reassured at least based on the evidence that young girls who receive HPV vaccines did not show increased signs (of) clinical outcomes of sexual activity," he told Reuters Health.

The vaccine, which has been recommended for 11- and 12-year-old girls in the U.S. since 2006, is still controversial, and only about half of girls start the series of shots.

One of the arguments against it has been that vaccination will make pre-teens feel a false sense of security when it comes to sex.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now calls for boys to get vaccinated as well.

For the new study, Omer and his colleagues analyzed databases from Kaiser Permanente Georgia, a managed care organization covering the Atlanta area. Out of 1,398 girls who were 11 or 12 when they saw their doctors in 2006 and 2007, 493 got at least one dose of the HPV vaccine.

Based on records of their primary care visits, 107 of the girls included in the study were given a pregnancy test through 2010, and 55 were tested for Chlamydia.

Girls who did or didn't get the HPV vaccine were equally likely to be tested for both.

Two girls in each group got pregnant during the study. One girl who'd been vaccinated was diagnosed with Chlamydia, compared to three unvaccinated girls, according to findings published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Omer's team didn't have any data on how many of the girls were sexually active during the study period. The researchers also couldn't tell if the STI and pregnancy tests were part of standard clinical procedures or if girls were tested because they were sexually active or had symptoms.

Divya Patel, an ob-gyn researcher from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, called the study a "really good first stab" at looking at the behavioral effects of HPV vaccination.

"But I felt that it didn't convey the full picture," she added.

For example, it's possible girls as young as 11 and 12 aren't even told what the vaccine is for, or only hear about it in the context of cervical cancer.

"I'd be really surprised if kids this age are knowing that, ?I got a vaccine for HPV and it's a sexually transmitted disease,'" Patel, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health.

Looking at pregnancy tests from primary care doctors' offices is also limiting, she said, because girls might be more likely to go to school health clinics, or buy a test off the shelves, in those situations.

She said future studies like this one, but in different locations and in older girls, will be needed to help piece together what's going on.

The researchers agreed that there are other issues limiting the popularity of the HPV vaccine besides concerns about a spike in sexual risk-taking.

"I think that perception of risk (with HPV) is not quite there. People don't really consider themselves at risk, or they're not concerned," maybe because it's so common, Patel said.

"We need to be aware of how to prevent it, and vaccination is the best way to do that."

Miami backup QB might start vs. Florida State

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. ? While growing up in South Florida, Ryan Williams had one game each year he just had to watch.

Come Saturday night, it looks as if he?ll be playing in it.
?
Williams is Miami?s backup quarterback. But he will start at Sun Life Stadium against Florida State if Stephen Morris isn?t recovered from a sprained left ankle suffered last Saturday against North Carolina.
?
?This is kind of what I grew up watching,?? Williams said of the Hurricanes about to face the Seminoles. ?I always wanted to play in a Florida State-Miami matchup. It?s really the biggest game on our schedule, based on rivalry.??
?
Williams graduated from Miramar High School, just up the road from Sun Life Stadium. He started at Memphis as a freshman in 2010 before transferring to Miami, where he redshirted last season and was ineligible to play.
?
On Saturday, Williams replaced Morris midway through the fourth quarter of an 18-14 loss to the Tar Heels. Although Hurricanes coach Al Golden didn?t completely rule Morris out against the Seminoles, he said Sunday he anticipates Williams will get the nod.
?
?We?ll access Stephen as the week kind of unfolds, but right now we?re going in thinking that Ryan is going to be the guy,?? Golden said.
?
X-rays were negative on Morris. Even if he can't play Saturday, Morris will have plenty of time to heal after that: Miami's next game isn't until Nov. 1 against Virginia Tech.
?
?It?s not a high-ankle sprain,?? Golden said. ?It?s the better of the sprains you can get on your ankle.??
?
After Morris landed wrong and went down in a heap, Williams came in to complete 9 of 13 passes for 80 yards against the Tar Heels. He almost rallied the Hurricanes to a come-from-behind win.
?
Williams claimed he wasn?t nervous. He sure doesn?t sound as if he would be if he gets the start against Florida State.
?
?UNC was a great defense, very fast,?? Williams said. ?I feel like they?re a lot like Florida State. They get a lot of South Florida kids ? lot of them from Miami, like we are. So it?s going to be a fast. It?s going to be a big show. It?s going to be a great game. If I play, I?m excited.??
?
Williams hardly will be the only one feeling that way in the game against the BCS 14th-ranked Seminoles, which will be televised by ABC. The Hurricanes are tired of getting kicked around by Florida State, which has won two straight games in the series and five of the past seven.
?
Interestingly, Miami?s past two wins vs. Florida State have come in Tallahassee. The Hurricanes have lost three straight at home to Florida State, not having won at home since 2004, when they were still playing at the Orange Bowl.
?
?I can?t wait,?? senior running back Mike James said about getting a final shot at the Seminoles. ?I just can?t wait. Any time it?s Florida State and Miami, the animosity is big. So you owe them all the time.??
?
Not only is it a rival game, but the Hurricanes (4-3, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) are trying to avoid their first three-game regular-season losing streak since 2007. And they?re now just a half game ahead of 2-1 Virginia Tech, their biggest threat in the ACC Coastal Division.
?
?We got a big game coming up,?? said wide receiver Allen Hurns.
?
Hurns expressed confidence in Williams. After all, Williams threw for 2,075 yards and 13 touchdowns at Memphis in 2010 and he looked good as Miami?s starting quarterback in spring drills while Morris sat out because of back surgery.
?
?Ryan is a good leader, as well,?? Hurns said. ?He was very poised (against the Tar Heels). . . . I think Ryan will be ready (Saturday) because even in the offseason there was competing (for the starting job). I?m comfortable with whoever?s back there at quarterback.??
?
It looks as if it will be Williams. He might not have played yet in any Miami-Florida State games, but he sure knows all about them.

Telus nixing activation fees for new and current subscribers

Oh the ever-so-wonderful activation fees. For some lucky folks in The True North, however, these one-time, undesired carrier tolls will be a thing of the past very, very soon. Today, Canadian carrier Telus announced it's taking a cue from Consumer Cellular and waving goodbye to those activation fees you so love; meaning it'll no longer charge the accustomed $35 to new customers or even the $25 for current subscribers who have just recently snagged a new device. Still, the nice gesture doesn't come without a cost, as the carrier has also said it plans to start charging $10 for SIM cards in order to "cover the product cost that was previously included in their renewal and activation fees " -- that's if you don't already have a compatible one, of course. Regardless, the plan is set to go into full effect come the first of November, with Telus noting it is all part of its plan to continue the "journey to be fair and transparent and help customers understand when they are paying for tangible products or value-added services."

KIDS TURF: Guide to Floor Renovation

Do you need to replace? your outdated house flooring? Are you planning to renovate your house? and want to start by replacing your floor finish? Here are some? guide before choosing the perfect? floor finish :

If you wish for a low-medium improvement? go for? ceramic tiles. This is? a very common flooring home improvement, basically because of its general acceptance as the standard for kitchen and bathroom flooring renovations. Ceramics? are affordable and? come in a variety of designs? and sizes.

For great alternative? to hardwood is the laminated type. This is preferred most by commercial building owner? , a better upgrade to? vinyl or carpet. It is excellent for basement renovations due to its heat insulation.

Carpet is? the? very common home renovation request but is hard to maintain. It? can get dirty easily? and has a low life expectancy. It most cases carpets? will depreciate the value of your home.

Vinyl? is the? cheapest? alternative to all other methods of flooring. They are designed to make the "look and feel" of tiles. There are vinyl that are durable also which can last 4 to 5 time longer? than the usual type. I believed that vinyl would not be a good home improvement .. not unless that it?s not your own house and you are just renting .

The Reference Frame: HadCRUT4: no warming for 16 years

The Hadley Centre at the Met Office released a new product replacing HadCRUT3, the temperature record of the Earth. It's called HadCRUT4.

Various years are rearranged but look at the chart of the last 16 years, since early 1997, as discussed in the Daily Mail. There has been no trend for 16 years.

Various folks in the newspapers disagree whether 16 years is a long time or a short time. Judith Curry says that the plateau already shows that the existing climate models are inadequate; Phil Jones says that 16 years is too short a period of time and climate models may disagree with the reality for 16 years ? but they will ultimately agree about the looming Armageddon.

Well, is 16 years a long time or a short time? It is longer than 5 years but shorter than 50 years. ;-) It depends what you're comparing 16 years with. Relatively to some screaming by climate activists who want some urgent action, 16 years is a very long time. Note that if we didn't do anything about CO2 since 1997 ? and except for wasting money for nonsense and tolerating unhinged alarmist bigots, we indeed haven't done anything with CO2 that continued to grow under the business as usual ? there would be no detectable change for 16 more years. We could have just postponed any solutions by extra 16 years.

And here we're talking about seeing no trend in the 16-year period at all. Seeing no trend is a rather constraining condition. When a trend is seen, it's still extremely far from being a dangerous or harmful one. It's just like with your body temperature. A good thermometer may tell you that your temperature increased from 36.6 ?C to 36.8 ?C but that still doesn't mean you must visit a doctor (incidentally, the magnitude of the temperature changes is pretty much the same in both discussions). So you may estimate that even if there were an underlying trend that would ultimately show up, it could only start to be dangerous or harmful in 80 years ? I just quoted an estimate. There's no strict boundary at which things "suddenly start to be dangerous or harmful" so you shouldn't be asking for a more accurate or more justified number.

In 80 years, people will have a better idea whether they want to try to geoengineer the Earth's temperature in one way or another. We're solving a different problem: whether we want to do similar things today. The plateau at the graph shows that plans to speed up such policies to a timeframe shorter than 16 years would be utterly irrational because the climate isn't changing that quickly. The noise, or the weather, is by far the dominant source of the variability at this timescale.

Forza Horizon review | Digital Trends

Forza Horizon review

The Forza franchise is the current king of the road, and despite a few bumps as the series find itself in unfamiliar territory, the newest entry in the series, Forza Horizon, still manages to impress once again

I would not classify myself as a racing game fan. I enjoy them for the most part, and I certainly respect the genre, but I tend to play them and then forget them ? with one notable exception. Forza Motorsport 4 was one of my favorite (and highest rated) games last year and it still remains in my gaming rotation. Although I do enjoy the odd car flavored news, and watching Top Gear gives me a momentary stat boost of +1 car knowledge, racing sims have not traditionally been my thing. There is just something meditative and tranquil about Forza 4 that keeps me coming back, but when Forza Horizon was announced, I admit that I greeted it with unveiled skepticism.

Taking a part of Forza?s identity ? the racing physics ? and dropping it into a different, even alien environment, felt like a half measure. It was not combining chocolate and peanut butter, it was combining chocolate and pickles. There are already plenty of racing games that have an arcade environment, but the Forza games just aren?t built that way. They are racing sims with a heavy, heavy emphasis on making you feel like you are actually in the car and racing on the famed N?rburgring, leaving skid marks on the Dayton asphalt. Sure, the two styles of racers share numerous similarities, but they are fundamentally different at their core, so combining them felt like a shallow attempt to perpetuate the Forza brand.

Turns out I was completely wrong. Forza Horizon is hands down the best racing game of the year. It?s not perfect, and it doesn?t come close to surpassing?Forza 4, but it stands on its own as an excellent addition to the franchise, and one I hope continues to grow.

Come for the Music, Stay for the Reckless Driving

The title of the game is a reference to the fictional Horizon festival located in the Colorado countryside. Although billed as a music event featuring bands like Friendly Fires, The Black Keys, and enough dubstep DJs to have you wub-wubbing for days, the real reason for you to be there is the accompanying auto show, which brings together 250 of the fastest and most insane people behind the wheel.

Forza HorizonYou, an unnamed rookie, are new to the circuit and trying to work your way up the ranks by winning races and completing challenges to gain popularity. As you begin to pile up wins, you unlock more races, discover and earn new cars, and face off against rivals ? both AI-controlled and via the ghost data of your friends. There is a narrative to point you onward and give you more motivation, but it is more just a structure to invest your own ideals into. If you have played the other Forza games, you will probably appreciate what this is right away. After competing in dozens ? even hundreds ? of traditional races, it is natural to daydream a bit and imagine a rival you are chasing down, or give yourself illusory goals. Forza Horizon?takes that to the next level, but?doesn?t?go much beyond that.?

There is an end game goal as you try to make it up the ranks to take on the champion, and there are a handful of cut scenes that pop up now and then, but they don?t really offer much. The story ? if you can really even call it that ? is quickly forgotten. In another game that might be a huge issue, but in Horizon it is barely missed. If anything it is a lost opportunity, but not a major issue with the game.

The Horizon festival is in the center of an expanse of Colorado that encompasses several environments, including twisting mountainous paths, open grasslands, barren deserts, and touches of civilization including houses and even a golf course. The map itself is huge, and it?s littered with objectives ? some fixed, others like the dozens of AI-controlled competitors, are constantly searching the countryside for challengers to engage in a quick race for credits, the game?s currency of choice.

Forza Horizon reviewThe more races you win, the more wristbands you earn, which in turn also unlock tougher races. One of the things that the game does very well is to introduce you into the world of Horizon gently, then allow you to play at your own pace. Once you have a firm grasp on the world and have completed a few early races, it opens up exponentially, and at any one time there are dozens of things you can do. The races are what push the campaign forward, but you can earn credits and popularity doing other car related things like stunt driving, speed challenges, and even through some more novel approaches like trying to keep the damage on a borrowed car low as you try to get to a designated point to take a picture.

The world is massive, and there are copious amounts of things to do. Horizon doesn?t reach the levels that Forza 4 did with content, but completing every single race in Forza 4 requires a nearly pathological level of dedication. Horizon has plenty to keep you occupied for a long, long time, and that doesn?t even include the multiplayer.

Put Your Friends into the Wall for Fun and Profit

Multiplayer components to racing games are nothing new, and the Forza games have been one of the best when it comes to online content. That has not changed.

Along with the standard races and the variations that come with it, there are a handful of playground games and a free roam that is populated with challenges. The playground games are a highlight, and include games like ?King,? where one person is king and gains points over time while others try to steal the crown by ramming them; ?Infected,? where the infected car tries to hit others and enlist them to hunt survivors until none remain; and ?Cat and Mouse,? where you have two teams and on each team is a single mouse that is trying to complete a lap while the cats are trying to slow down the other team?s mouse. If you want to play any of these events but don?t have a decent car, you can also borrow one for the event, which makes it balanced and fair.

ForzaEach of these playground modes are fun, and along with races they help you level up your online rank. When you do reach a new level, you then receive a shot a slot machine like bonus, which randomly rewards you with anything from a jackpot like a Bugatti Veyron to a bust of a few hundred credits. It is random and wildly addictive. It is also a great way to earn some decent (or potentially exceptional) cars for the single player campaign.

The free roam should be a huge draw to this game, but it feels a bit hollow. If you like, you can go and explore with friends, or you can attempt challenges that are specific to free mode and require a certain set of elements to complete. Some of these challenges are simple enough if you have coordination ? things like having four cars all maintain a particular median speed through a speed check area, while others may require things like eight cars to cross a speed point at 200 mph within three seconds of each other. The rewards will vary based on the difficulty.

What?s missing is the integration with the single player campaign. It would have made sense to allow drop in play for the host?s campaign. Having my friend join me in a race event would have pushed this game in a fantastic new direction, but instead the free roam is a novelty that grows old unless you happen to have a dedicated group of eight friends to go after the more obscure challenges, which can be as frustrating as they are rewarding.

The Oil Spot on the Driveway

As you might expect of the Forza series, the graphics, especially the look of the cars, borders on incredible. Each ride has its own distinctive feel to it as well, and the physics that made the series what it is are present in Horizon. The more narrative-based presentation is a new thing for the series, and it generally works well. The rivals you will face all have a personality of their own as well, and while they veer sharply towards stereotype territory, they offer just enough color to be memorable as you beat them and move on.

Forza HorizonAccompanying you on your journey up the ranks is the mostly unseen voice of one of the event coordinators who becomes your ally. She can be flirty at times, but is generally a soothing guide. There is also a fairly broad selection of music from all genres to sort through. It ranges in quality, but that comes down far more to personal taste, and the inclusion in the game is a good one.

Despite my love of the game, there is one thing that irked me about Horizon: the token system. Microtransactions within a game are nothing new, and for the most part the tokens just act as shortcuts rather than necessities, but you are constantly being offered ways to spend real money ? and it is not a cheap proposal.

One thing you will constantly be offered is a treasure map, which will unlock all the hidden items on the map for a mere five tokens. Those five tokens will cost you 400 MS points, or $5, and the map doesn?t really offer much you wouldn?t find on your own. If anything, it actually takes away from the game and robs you of the joy of exploration. Of course, it is optional though. If you want to buy more tokens, be prepared to put down some serious cash. This is a minor complaint since you can unlock everything with enough time and effort, but the emphasis to buy tokens is inescapable.

FHOne other issue that falls under the ?not really a problem, but?? category is the garage selection.?Forza Horizon begins with around 125 cars for you to unlock, which pales in comparison to the 534 that were available at launch for Forza 4. Sure, they are different games, but you can almost smell the tidal wave of DLC coming after Horizon. Having additional content for a game is never a bad thing in my book, but removing it from the game in order to sell it later is a bad move ? if that is indeed the case. If not, even if I am totally wrong, then there are still fewer cars than in the previous Forza game. Perhaps that is the opinion of spoiled gamer, used to more-more-more, but part of the thrill with games like Forza is unlocking and playing some of the rarest and wildest cars in the world that none of us will ever in our lives actually drive, and may not even see in person.

Conclusion

The Forza series is already at the top of the racing sim food chain, and developers Turn 10 and Playground Games have made a claim for the top of the more arcade-like racing games as well. Forza Horizon offers you an open world and then crams it full of things to do. On the other hand, the narrative works as a means to further your progress through the game, but it doesn?t ever really offer you anything to engage with. You could remove it entirely and be left with exactly the same game. The free mode also feels like it could have been so much more, and while there are a lot of cars, the absences are notable.

All of that aside, Forza Horizon is still the best racing game of the year. It is far from perfect, but the attempt at something new feels fresh, even if the ideas themselves are familiar. Horizon doesn?t come close to the lofty heights that Forza 4 reached, but it is a worthy addition to the family of the best racing series around.

Bentley, Lamborghini SUVs May Be Delayed

Just the Facts:
  • The launch of the Bentley and Lamborghini luxury SUVs may be delayed because of economic headwinds, say sources within parent Volkswagen.
  • Slowing sales within the Volkswagen Group are prompting a reassessment of investment plans.
  • Even without a recession, these high-end luxury SUVs would face an uphill battle against such rivals as the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X6 and upcoming Maserati Levante.

BERLIN ? The launch of the Bentley and Lamborghini luxury SUVs may be delayed because of economic headwinds, say sources within parent Volkswagen.

Slowing sales within the Volkswagen Group may put the brakes on a production version of the Bentley EXP 9 F concept and the Lamborghini Urus. The EXP 9 F was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show and the Lamborghini Urus at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show.

Development of both cars has continued since their debuts with the ambition of mid-decade launches, but slowing sales within the VW Group, which has previously appeared almost immune from the global recession, are prompting a reassessment of the Group's investment plans.

The Bentley created controversy for its extravagant styling, while the Lamborghini was criticized for being too far removed from the supercars that define the brand. However, Bentley claims that potential customers like the car, while Lamborghini has previously produced an SUV in the form of the 1980s LM002.

Even without a recession, these high-end luxury SUVs would face an uphill battle against such rivals as the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X6 and upcoming Maserati Levante.

At the 2012 Paris Auto Show, VW Group Finance Chief Hans Dieter Poetsch indicated that sinking European demand for cars could trigger further cash-saving measures at the company.

"It's normal that one looks for items that aren't imperative," he said, referring to projects that might be put on hold.

However, at this stage work has not completely ceased on the two SUVs. Bentley insiders told Edmunds on Friday that development work continues, and that the brand is still anticipating a decision on the project's fate to be made before the end of the year, as was previously the case.

Similarly, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Reuters that work would continue on the Urus even though it had yet to be signed off by VW.

No official statement on either project has been forthcoming, but decisions on both are likely before the year ends.

Edmunds says: Europe's economic woes may delay or sink the Bentley and Lamborghini SUVs.

NSBDC provides workshop and support to help businesses win ...

Innovative Nevada businesses encouraged to attend workshop and apply for new travel and technical assistance support

RENO, Nev. ? Last year, 14 Nevada companies received grants through the Small Business Innovation Research or Small Business Technology Transfer Programs (SBIR/STTR), federally funded programs that support companies pursuing innovative technologies. However, those involved in economic development in the state believe that more Nevada companies can successfully compete for these grants that can provide companies with more than $1 million to develop cutting-edge technologies.

The Nevada Small Business Development Center (NSBDC) and the University of Nevada, Reno College of Business will offer a workshop on Oct. 19 in Reno to assist Nevada companies that may be interested in competing for these funds. In addition, the NSBDC recently received a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration that will enable it to provide further assistance to companies eligible to compete for these funds. The grant will allow the NSBDC to award 10 $500 travel stipends to those who want to attend the 2012 National SBIR/STTR Conference Nov. 13-15 in Portland, Ore., and to award grants that will cover up to $2,000 in support for university or research faculty to help companies prepare proposals.

The Oct. 19, all-day? workshop in Reno will provide intensive training on proposal writing techniques and tips and is intended to increase the number of awards received by Nevada companies.

?The competition for these grants is stiff ? approximately one in 15 proposals are funded in Phase I,? explained Fritz Grupe, professor emeritus at the University of Nevada, Reno College of Business and manager of the Small Business Innovation Research Program at the NSBDC. ?Nevertheless, these programs remain the largest startup fund in the United States, and Nevada companies need to go after them aggressively.?

Through the two programs, 11 agencies, such as the Department of Defense, the Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health, award $2.5 billion annually in grants in two phases. In the first phase, up to $150,000 enables companies to do feasibility studies. In the second phase, as much as a $1.5 million is provided to support further research and development. Each of the agencies has specific priorities and awards the grants to encourage feasibility research and prototype development that helps to meet those identified needs. All of the agencies have representatives available to talk to potential grant applicants about their ideas at the national conference in Portland next month.

The Oct. 19 workshop in Reno will be led Michael Kurek, a nationally recognized consultant who has special expertise in writing these proposals. He is especially active in Michigan, where he works with energy, defense and biological firms to acquire federal funding. He also has extensive industrial experience and keeps close track of how the federal agencies are changing priorities and what kinds of proposals are being funded.

?The workshop aims to show attendees how to win funding, not just how to write a proposal that meets the basic criteria,? Grupe said.

The workshop costs $25 and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Redfield Campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, 18600 Wedge Parkway, in the Nell J. Redfield Building A, Room 215. For more information on the workshop, or to apply for a travel grant to the national conference or a technical assistance grant, contact Grupe at 775-813-7407 or fritz@unr.edu. Are you investing in Gold? - DINKS Finance

Good Morning DINKS. We recently published a post about the fluctuations in the price of gold and how commodities affect our economy (or vice versa).? I want to follow up on this post and discuss a little bit in more details about the risks of investing in gold and other commodities. Investing in gold, silver, and oil seems to be a hot investment topic right now, and as a financial professional I continuously see investors making the same mistakes when it comes to investing in gold. I would love to know what you think about gold ? do you invest in gold bullion, do you own gold bars, or do you invest in gold mining companies?

As a financial professional I personally can?t stand it when clients come into our bank branch and want to invest in gold because their neighbour, their cousin, or their dentist told them that it was a good investment.? Do you remember my client who wanted to sell his life savings and invest in gold based on the advice of his classmate? The first rule about investing is that it is a personal choice.? Just because your neighbour made money by investing in gold doesn?t necessarily mean that you will too.

Not everyone makes money in gold

By the time you hear about a ?must buy? investment the odds are that it?s probably too late for you to make a huge profit. People who invest in gold, or other commodities such as oil, are hoping to make a capital gain on their investment. This means that they want to sell it at a much higher price than they paid for it. If people are telling you that ?you must buy? gold then the secret is already out and the price of the commodity is already high.? This is not to say that you won?t make money if you purchase gold or gold related investments (aka gold mining companies), but you definitely won?t make as much money as someone who bought gold before the boom.

In a very general nutshell investors can make money in one of three ways: they can earn interest on low risk fixed income investments, they can earn dividends on stock and mutual fund investments, or they can earn capital gains on higher risk investment such as commodities and investing in individual sectors.? If you purchase gold at a high price per ounce you may make some profit, but you won?t make a lot of profit.? The key to making money on capital gains is to buy low and sell high, but if everyone is talking about a particular type of investment the odds are that the price is already high.

Don?t kid yourself, gold is a high risk investment

Some investors may be looking for growth oriented investments in their investment or retirement portfolios.? Some investors chose to purchase foreign or domestic stocks, some investors choose to invest in equity mutual funds, and some investors chose to invest in commodities, some chose to invest in individual sectors of the economy such as health care or technology, and some investors chose to purchase precious metals.

Regardless of which type of high risk investment you choose you should make an informed decision.? Research the past performance of the investment and decide if you are comfortable with the highs and lows over the past year.? High risk investments can offer a high potential profit, but they can also have a big potential loss. You have to be willing to take the risk for the possibility at the reward when purchasing in high risk investments.
